About the Department

Research at the department is carried out by three research groups:

  • IT Systems Development and Distributed Systems
  • Management and Organisation of IT
  • Human-Computer Interaction.

The three research groups represent three fields that are important to the study programmes conducted by the department, to the privat and public organisations, to which the department contributes, and to the international field of research, to which the department belongs.

IT Systems Development and Distributed Systems
IT systems development deals with design, construction, and implementation of IT based systems. The area includes technically oriented computer science topics as well as organisational and management oriented disciplines.

The research of the IT systems development group concentrates on the design and construction of IT based systems and is divided into two - related - areas: Systems development processes and distributed systems.

Management and Organisation of IT
This group focuses primarily on management and organisation of IT for the benefit of private and public enterprises as well as individuals. The research made by the group concentrates on the following three areas: IT - management and strategy, IT - innovation and change and Information economics.

The group is interdisciplinary and represents sociology, political science, strategy and organisation theory, business administration and computer science. Themes of current interest include e-business and knowledge management. In the majority of the research projects, members of the group cooperate with external partners.

Human-Computer Interaction
Interface design, visual interaction, test and evaluation, usability, community knowledge, design and use of knowledge systems, multimedia system development, adult e-learning and awareness, scenarios, model users, interactive spaces, architecture and aesthetics.

The IT-field is very broad and research and development have to meet diverse needs. It is important that the HCI group has a solid foundation in informatics and business administration. Nevertheless, to deal with the diverse needs requires an interdisciplinary group. We cover fields such as computer science, business economics, psychology, history, archaeology, literature, language and film studies. Our focus is techniques and tools for design and use. Field studies, experimental research, prototyping, test and evaluation are fundamental elements in our work
