The core focus areas of research undertaken at ARC are to:

  • Provide comprehensible analyses of the contextual complexities in Asian business and economics.
  • Understand the social, political, and cultural bases behind the opportunities and challenges faced by Asian economies.
  • Identify the various economic, political, social and institutional linkages among Asian countries and how these relate to the world.
  • Identify key contemporary themes that have a special bearing on Asia such as demography, diaspora, environment, education, and urbanization.
  • Understand Asian institutions for economic and social governance.

Research Profile

Asia Research Centre's research focuses primarily on China, India, Japan and Southeast Asia.

The Centre does not only prioritize research within specific geographical regions, but also focuses on cross-regional and comparative studies. The Centre will continue to emphasize its interdisciplinary approaches to studying Asian countries, regions, and issues that link them to each other and the global system.

The vision is to become a world-class Asian Studies research centre. The Centre's commitment to Asian Studies will be fulfilled by consolidating its existing strengths and expanding to new thematic areas of Asian studies in increasingly complex regional and global dynamics. The Centre sees itself as primarily a research centre with a goal to attract internationally acclaimed faculty and PhD students and to undertake cutting-edge research within its particular areas of strengths on China, India, Japan, and the Southeast Asian countries.

The mission is to provide up to date research and reliable analysis of current political, social, economic and business developments in the Asian region, focusing especially on China, Japan, India and Southeast Asia. On the basis of cross-disciplinary, national and cross-regional studies, ARC produces high quality data and analyses to a host of interested parties representing academia, the political establishment and governments, the media, the public as well as the national and international business communities.
