Frequently Asked Questions About Housing

May I send my Accommodation Application in before I send in the rest of my registration forms to CBS?

YES!! You are welcome - in fact encouraged - to send your Accommodation Application to the Housing Office before you send in the rest of your Registration Materials for CBS. Many times the courses are first put up quite late on the web, but you are ready to apply for housing. So please do. There is no problem in that.

When will I know my address in Copenhagen?

  • If you have applied for the Autumn Semester you will receive information about your accommodation in Copenhagen, including a rental agreement, by mid-July, BY CBS EMAIL ONLY (we sent your login and password in your registration package). After this period you should check your email daily since changes may occur. It is your responsibility to check your email, and to let us know if you have not received your housing information by July 20. It also is your responsibility to inform us of any change of email address.
  • If you have applied for the Spring Semester, you will receive information about your accommodation in Copenhagen, including a rental agreement, by mid-December, BY CBS EMAIL ONLY (we sent your login and password in your registration package). After this period you should check your email daily since changes may occur. It is your responsibility to check your email, and to let us know if you have not received your housing information by December 20. It is also your responsibility to inform us of any change of email address.

Can I use my hotmail account?
No! Your email account must not be a hotmail account and there must be a minimum of 2 MB of free space in your inbox for receiving mail. If you must use a free mail account to forward you CBS EMAIL to, then one such as Yahoo is best - it currently offers unlimited free space. any mail sent that is returned to us from a mail box that is over-quota is not re-sent.

When can I move into my room?

  • If you are coming for the Autumn Semester, your room will be available from August 18 until December 22.
  • If you are coming for the Spring Semester, your room will be available from January 19 until June 20.

How do I pay?
Please see the section in the Accommodation section entitled 'Payments & Prices.' It is of the utmost importance that you bring with you all your receipts from money transfers made prior to your arrival in Copenhagen. Unfortunately, mistakes sometimes happen in the administration process, and it is easier to solve the matter if you have the receipts with you.

Can I receive a discount by paying my total rent for the whole period at once?
No, but remember that you save yourself time, effort and fees if the payment for the whole semester is made on one occasion.

Why didn’t I get my first priority?

  • When you receive the information about your accommodation in Copenhagen, there could be several reasons why you did not get your first priority. Primarily it is due to the fact that there are only a limited number of student Residence Halls / Shared Apartments available. Hence, it is impossible to give 120 persons their first priority if they want a room in a residence where we only have 25 rooms.
  • Furthermore, good, centrally located student housing in Copenhagen is VERY expensive and hard to find. Consequently, many of the visiting students at Copenhagen Business School coming in the autumn semester have been provided with a furnished room in a private home. Another very important factor is in which order your application form has been received at CBS and whether it arrived before the deadline or not (June 1 for Autumn Semester and November 1 for Spring Semester).
  • Since the application is on a first come - first serve basis, we cannot guarantee a room for you if we do not received your application form before the deadline.

Why is my room more expensive than what I requested?
In some cases, you might have been given a room that is more expensive than what you have requested. This can occur when it has not been possible to fulfil your first priority and we have had to find an alternative to your first, second or third priority. Therefore, in order to follow your preferences we might have given you a room a bit larger and slightly more expensive. We are aware of the inconvenience this might cause to those of you in question, but unfortunately we are unable to solve the situation any differently.

Will there be a phone in my residence?
Residence halls and shared apartments all have telephone access. Please check for further details at the specific residences. There are, however, a few private houses where a phone is not available (except for important calls from family, your home university and CBS), but this will be accounted for in the rent. Therefore, a cell phone would be a wise thing to have with you in Denmark.

How much must I pay in deposit, and when will it be returned?

  • Residence Hall or a Shared Apartment: Your deposit is DKK 3000. This deposit is not included in the price given for the two instalments. This means that you need to add DKK 3000 to the payment of the first instalment. Your deposit will be returned by money transfer to your home bank account 6 weeks after your departure at the end of the semester. Cash refunds prior to your departure are NOT possible.
  • Renting a room in a Private Home: Your deposit is equivalent to one month’s rent and must be paid upon arrival along with the rent for the first 1½ month. Your deposit will be returned before your departure.
  • For all types:Your landlord/lady or the inspector at the residence reserves the right, if necessary, to charge you for bringing the premises back to the standard they were in when you moved in and for cleaning common areas. It is very important that when you leave, you check out with your landlord/lady or the inspector appointed, to avoid any misunderstandings about the repayment of the deposit.

Why do you need my bank account number?
Your deposit will be returned by money transfer after your departure from Denmark. Therefore, it is VERY important that you fill in this data on the bank information form correctly. You must write the name of the account holder, the name and address of the bank, the account number (make sure to get all the numbers for oversees money transfer) and also the international SWIFT-address, and IBAN number. Please note: The Bank Information Form can only be returned by email to ps.intoff@cbs.dk.

What about bed linen?
In Denmark, duvets are used, not blankets. Therefore, you will need cases for the duvet and the pillow, as well as a bottom sheet. As sizes vary from country to country it may be easier and cheaper for you to buy these items in Denmark. A “start-up package” which costs DKK 300 will be in your room when you arrive. The amount must be paid with your first instalment and deposit.

Do I have to buy or bring furniture and kitchen utensils?
All rooms rented out through CBS are fully furnished with a bed, a table, a chair, a closet, lamps etc. The kitchens are equipped with all utensils for cooking and eating in shared apartments and residence halls. Should there be anything missing this will be provided upon notice.

Do I have Internet access in my room?
All rooms have access to the internet. There are also many possibilities to connect to the Internet from CBS buildings and libraries, where your connection is free of charge. Please look at our website for details at each of the specific residences.

How far is my residence from CBS and from the City Centre?
Please look under “Maps & Directions” or visit the web page of www.krak.dk and search for the address under the menu of Kort; Vejvisning. Vej means road, Nr. is the house number, Postnr. is the postal code and By is the city.

Who do I contact with other questions about housing?
After you have looked carefully through the Accommodation section of CBS International, if you still have questions, please contact Housing Coordinator Marianne Bach or one of her assistants at housing.intoff@cbs.dk

Frequently Asked Questions About Course Registration

Where can I find course descriptions?

Course descriptions are found in the either for undergraduate courses at www.cbs.dk/undergrad or for graduate courses at www.cbs.dk/grad .

What is the language of instruction?
The language of instruction is English which is why students must have advanced English skills to be able to participate in the program. An advanced level is a TOEFL score of minimum 570 or the equivalent. A limited number of courses are taught in Spanish, German or French. The course descriptions will indicate if a course is taught in other languages than English.

How many credits do I need to take at CBS?
A full workload at the Copenhagen Business School is 30 ECTS credits. CBS requires that each exchange student take a full-load while studying at CBS, regardless of whether credit may be obtained at the home university. CBS allows the student to develop the skill of working under the pressure of a heavy workload similar to their future position in a business environment. If a student does not take the required number of credits, a residence permit will not be issued and can be revoked if the load is not maintained. On the other hand, we do not recommend more than 30 ECTS per semester; however, if you have special requirements, then you may take up to but no more than 45 ECTS credits in one semester.

Can I register for graduate courses?
Only students who have completed a bachelor’s degree or a minimum of 3 years specialized study can register for graduate courses. Also make sure that you have satisfied the prerequisites (if any) listed in the course descriptions for the courses you would like to follow

When is the timetable for the courses available?
The timetable will be available in the middle of August (Fall semester) and middle of January (Spring semester) if not already indicated in the course descriptions. The timetable will be included in the “Welcome Package” you will receive after your arrival in Copenhagen.

Do I need to indicate alternative course choices on my Choice of Courses Form?
Yes, since there might be changes in the class schedule or in course offerings, CBS requires you to list alternative choices. You must indicate one alternative course for each of the courses selected. The alternative courses will be used if it is impossible to enroll you in your primary choices. Please also attach a letter to the form if you have special reasons for needing to take a specific course but remember that such a letter will not guarantee a course. It is not advisable to base your graduation on taking a specific course while attending CBS as an exchange student, since we cannot guarantee that all courses announced in the Course Catalogue 2007/2008 will be offered.

Will I receive confirmation of my courses before arriving in Copenhagen?
No. Please note that the courses that appear on your course enrolment status on CBS e-Campus before you arrive in Copenhagen might not be courses that you will be assigned to. Due to internal administrative procedures at CBS it is unfortunately not possible for us to confirm your course choices before upon arrival.

Can I change my courses after arrival in Copenhagen?
Yes, it is possible to drop and add courses during the first two weeks of the semester.

Who should I contact if I have questions regarding my course choices?

Who should I contact if I have questions regarding the Danish Crash Course?
You can write to The Language Center langcen@cbs.dk .
